Ribbed Knit
I used to struggle with wearing rib knit dresses because I always felt I didn’t have the right body for them. At 5’6″ I’m average height but I have a short torso and my stomach has never been flat flat, and I know you know what I mean when I say that. With my waist around 28″ and widest part of my hips being 40″ I’m a classic pear shaped shawty, even though I try my hardest to hide it with padded push up bras. The main issue I always ran into when shopping for rib knit dresses was that I kept buying ones that weren’t made with curves in mind. Since I was self conscious about my belly I always bought a size up because they felt more comfortable to move in but they weren’t the most flattering. It wasn’t until much later in life, and when I branched out from fast fashion stores, that I realized not all ribbed dresses were created equal. I’ve found the key to flattering knit dresses is to find ones designed with hourglass and pear shaped women in mind. That means dresses that are actually nipped in at the waist or tie at the waist to show off your curves without being too loose on top or tight on bottom. To save you the trouble of having to hunt the internet up and down I’ve rounded up 13 flattering ribbed knit dresses for my fellow pear shaped ladies so you can be comfortable and confident that you look damn good! Plus I’m sharing ways I’ve styled my knit dresses in case you need some inspo.

About the Dress
Is there any better feeling than when you find a dress that’s flattering and doesn’t require any fuss? I snagged this minimal ribbed sweater dress from ASOS 3 years ago and it gets so much wear! While I’ve lost some weight since then, the size 8 still fits perfectly to show off my figure without making me look like a sack of potatoes. As you’ll see one of the requirements I have when buying longer dress is that it has to have a slit because I love to show off my thick thighs! I also think it helps to highlight my figure. With it being made of acrylic I was a little worried it would lose its shape but it has lasted really well! The fabric is also very soft, thick but still breathable. It’s so flattering and versatile that you can either let the dress do the talking or use it as a base for a really fun outfit.
Tips for Styling
For early fall I tend to keep my accessories and layering to a minimum. Seriously the less work I have to do to look put together, the better. In this case I went with a cute hat and chic but comfortable ankle boots, get the details on this sweater dress outfit here plus my sweater dress picks for pear shaped women. The great thing about this dress is that it transitions so effortlessly for basically anything and from season to season. I can dress it up with some knee high boots for work or dress it down with some sneakers to take Ana for a walk. As the weather drops I love to layer it under a statement coat, you’ll see an example if you keep scrolling.
About this Dress
Can you believe I’ve had this ribbed dress from H&M for over 5 years? I remember trying it on and instantly fell in love with it. In a size medium it fits in all the right places without being too snug. The front and back v-neck makes it perfect for summer and layering as it starts to cool. Similar to the ASOS dress above the fabric is so comfortable, perfect for lounging or wearing out and about!
Tips for Styling
Just because a dress is sleeveless doesn’t mean you can’t wear it in the fall. With a black dress you really have a lot of styling options. The easiest way to transition a sleeveless ribbed dress is by layering it under a coat, cardigan or an on trend shacket. The key here is to keep the length of your layering piece in mind. Personally I find pairing midi/maxi pieces is the most flattering for my pear shape.
About this Dress
I ran across Meshki scrolling through IG and was a little skeptical. I’d been hoodwinked by sponsored posts before so I scoured the hashtags to see if they were legit. After some digging I took the leap of faith and I’m so glad I did! I went with a size Medium which fits like a glove. I love that it isn’t see through which happens often with white clothes. It’s made of really sturdy fabric.
Tips for Styling
To really add some edge to an otherwise simple knit dress pair it with a statement jacket! The key here is not to go too overboard. Try to keep everything in the same color family so you don’t take away the attention from your statement piece. More on how to pull of this snake print jacket here.
About this Dress
Another ribbed dress I’ve had on heavy rotation is this rust colored maxi from & Other Stories. I added this dress 3 years ago during a Black Friday sale in a size 8. The heavier fabric and color make it perfect for the fall and winter. I know the color might throw some people off but like everything else in my closet this dress really is versatile. I was surprised by just how much I was able to mix it with what I already owned.
Tips for Styling
As I mentioned earlier when winter starts to make an appearance I like to layer with a maxi coat. A longer coat helps to keep the warmth in and looks ultra chic! If I’m in a rush I’ll keep it simple with a coat in a classic color and cut. On days I have a little more time to put thought into my outfit I like to add interest with some texture like this borg coat I’m wearing. If I really want to make a statement then I’ll go the extra step and play with patterns or prints that compliment my dress. Honestly no matter what you choose, as long as your comfortable and feel good then you can’t go wrong!
