So you’ve bought your ticket and booked your hotel for an awesome, and well deserved, get-away. You go to pack for your vacay but just like trying to get dressed for the day, you look in your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear. Many women struggle with how to pack effectively and stay stylish on vacation. Though you have in mind what you think your vacation essentials should be, you’re having a hard time nailing down exactly what to bring. The trick to staying stylish on vacation is to create a capsule wardrobe for your vacation. But what exactly is a capsule wardrobe and how do you create one for your trip?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few items that work for a specific occasion or season. These pieces are chosen by you based off of your body type, style preferences and lifestyle. So in order to create a capsule wardrobe for your vacation you need to do the following:
- Plan your trip. Not only should you know how many days your trip will be, but also take into account what the weather will be like and things you plan on doing.
- Decide how many outfits you need. Now that you have a better idea of what your vacay entails you can pick just how many different outfits you may need. For example I’m going on a weekend trip to visit my family in Ohio this weekend. Since I’ll be gone for 3 days I plan to have 6-7 outfits to cover my daily activities, working out and a night out look.
- Identify the type of clothing you plan to bring. For longer trips to a tropical locale determine what items, like bathing suits or cover-ups, you need and plan to wear multiple times. If you’re going on a shorter trip choose clothes that work for each activity.
- Plan your outfits, including the accessories. Choose specific items from your wardrobe and create outfits for each activity and day of your trip. The key is to stick to a color palette while picking basic and statement pieces that work well together. This way you can put together a last minute outfit if need be. Also take this time to plan what accessories, shoes or layers you’ll need to polish off your looks.
Creating a capsule wardrobe for your vacation and choosing outfits before hand is a great habit to develop because: 1) it helps you pack efficiently, 2) you can ensure you have an outfit for every occasion, 3) it saves you time getting ready on your trip and 4) allows you to stay stylish on vacation. Six to Seven outfits for a three day trip sounds like a lot. That’s a lot of luggage to drag around. I just pack one outfit per day (plus bathing suit and one work out outfit), and then plan each outfit with layers to adjust for daytime/night time temperatures. But it is hard. I find it especially difficult if your going to a place that will have completely different temperatures than what you have where your living. It’s hard to think summer clothes when you’re wearing boots and turtlenecks.
Oh that’s not to have two outfits a day Amy, that’s 6-7 outfits including work out clothes since I didn’t want to work out in the same stuff every day (ick!). So overall I’d have one outfit per day and then a work out outfit for each day as well. It’s also not as much to carry around as you think, I fit all of that easily in a carry on bag with room to pack my toiletries and shoes 🙂
yes, I always struggle with trying to remain stylish yet practical while vacationing! Love all your looks!

Great tips for planning your travel wardrobe! It can be tricky selecting a few options, but it will be less of a headache if you make it as versatile as possible. Picking out a few items to mix with one another goes a long way when you’re traveling!

Some great tips! 🙂
I always overpack on holidays, but I find if I take pieces I can wear more than once then I save some space 🙂
I went to Melbourne recently and packed really well – as I knew whatever space I had in my carry-on I could use for more purchases while I was there, haha! I love shopping in Melbourne.

Love your vacation looks! I tend to stick to black & white when I travel since it makes pieces so much easier to mix and match.
