There was a time back when I was first experimenting with my style, and my blog was on Tumblr, that I gravitated towards bold prints. I even went as far as to mix and match them in a monthly style challenge I had set for myself. Though it taught me a lot about creating a well balanced outfit, ultimately I discovered that I’m not really a fan of many prints and patterns simply because they require more effort. And to be honest I don’t like to put a lot effort into getting dressed. Yet from time to time I find a piece that, despite my hatred for clothes that aren’t easy to style, I have to have.
I share that with you to say that it’s important to experiment. It teaches you just as much about what you like as it does what you don’t like. That knowledge is necessary to really refining your style. And it’s also okay to include clothes into your wardrobe that appear to go against your normal preferences. Your style doesn’t have to fall into one category. You can be boho and sophisticated. Just like we wear many hats during the day, so can our closets can hold pieces for each of our inner muses.
In order to have an effortless wardrobe you have to be critical before spending your money. Clothes that seamlessly work with what you already own, fit like a glove, and make you feel incredible are no brainers. It’s those impulse purchases that tend to get us. The “I totally would wear this all the time” finds that secretly in the back of your head you’re also wondering “when am I really going to wear this”. When these pieces arise I recommend putting them on hold for 24 hours. If you come back to the store the next day, odds are you really like the piece. But you have to be honest with yourself, if you’re questioning the item in anyway you probably want to skip it. The worst thing you can do besides waste your money is waste time trying to force something to work that you know simply doesn’t. Be object, be brutally truthful and your style will fall into place. See how I styled this shirt dress as a tunic and how I styled this shirt dress as a mini dress.

I like bold prints in theory but looking in my closet I don’t have any except in scarves. I find I can’t wear them as often as a solid since they usually want to stand on their own. Though, this dress looks great and I can see there are many layering options with it. Enjoy!

If you look in my closet you’d see the same thing Julia, it’s pretty void of prints except for maybe two pieces. I’m glad you like the dress and don’t be afraid to let your prints stand out, you’d be surprised how liberating it can be!
I like wearing bold prints, but they can really overpower an outfit. Yours looks very classy with black and white and the color of your lipstick!

Kristin, the key when wearing bolder prints is to pair them with neutral accessories or colors to keep your outfit from looking too busy.
I love it, it looks really great on you. I think it is very important to have key pieces and then build your wardrobe around them
I couldn’t agree more Anna, it’s great to have a few stand out pieces to make your basics pop!
I definitely do not fit into one style category. I often combine boho, preppy, classic, vintage, and a tiny little bit of my leftover 90’s grunge into my wardrobe. And I’m okay with that! This shirt dress is absolutely magnificent! I am totally swooning over it! Really great look!
