Maxi to Mini
Often when I get dressed I ask myself how I can give my outfit a dash of je ne sais quio? Is there an unexpected accessory I can add or layer to throw on? Maybe even a different way to wear the piece itself. Finding an answer to these questions is what makes putting together an outfit so much fun for me. I especially love when I can turn an everyday look that doesn’t have a lot of color or prints into something that makes people do a double take. Take this maxi dress from Need Supply Co. for example. Sure I could have worn it as is. I probably would’ve added some sneakers to run errands but truthfully that look feels overly done to me. I practically see some version of it on IG everyday. And by now I expect y’all to know I really don’t like looking like everyone else. Not that there’s anything wrong with rocking a popular look but not taking a sec to add some JB flair just isn’t my thing. As I tried on the dress, I stared in the mirror and re-imagined how the dress itself could look. I do this mostly with pieces that I was hoping would fit me differently. In my mind I was wanting the slit to be higher up on my thigh to show a little more leg and that’s when it came to me. We all know the style hack of using a hair tie to turn our t-shirts into crop tops, but how often do we use that trick elsewhere? I decided to use a clear elastic to turn my maxi dress into a mini dress. After picking my new desired length I created a cute knot with the excess fabric then fiddled with the rest of the dress so it would lay in a flattering way. It’s a free little trick that magically breathes new life into what would otherwise be a seemingly simple piece. It’s those little aha moments that you have that really add something personal to a look.
