White Button Up

May 24, 2020 | Ways to Wear

Nothing says summer quite like a white button up. It’s one of those pieces that works with pretty much everything. Paired with jeans and sneakers for a quick coffee run, tied into a crop top over a swim suit after soaking in the sun, or even just to wear around the house as the summer breeze blows in your window. With so many ways to wear it, I’ve put together a few of my favorite oversized white button up outfit ideas for some unique ways you can style yours this summer.

You can’t go wrong with the tie front method to breathe some new life into your button up. I find myself doing this often especially when I have a pair of pants that I really want to show off. What I love about the tie front look is that you can easily make it work for you, the trick here is finding exactly where to tie it. Being pear shaped I prefer to tie it at the smallest part of my waist to help highlight my shape. Other people might find it more comfortable to just tie it closer to their hips. There’s not wrong answer here, only what makes you feel amazing!

Don’t underestimate a white button up’s potential to be sexy. A lot of people forget that you can convert a plain white button up into an off the shoulder top! You can be playful and just let one shoulder hang or go all out with both sides. I love this particular look because I can sneakily still wear my bra without anyone being the wiser. To keep the top from slipping down too far I like to tuck part of the top into my bra or even use safety pins. If tying it up feels a little too risque you can also leave the bottom half buttoned and tuck it into your pants for a more modest but still sexy look!

I purposefully buy button ups, and even some blazers, a size or two larger so that I can wear them as a dress. Right now I’m finding so much joy in sipping some tea and feeling the warm summer air come through the window in a cotton button up. If you’re worried about looking frumpy take a note from Carrie in Sex in the City and cinch your button up at the waist with a belt. Another alternative is to find button ups with a curved hem so you can tastefully leave the last few buttons undone which allows for some leg to show.

This last option I discovered just a few days ago scrolling through Pinterest, go figure, and I honestly can’t believe I never thought of it. Instead of tying your button up in the front you can twist it in front of your body then either tuck it into your bra or tie it in the back for a super flattering crop top! Like what?!?! It’s a more conservative take on the off the shoulder tie front combo that still adds a ton of style. You can either leave the top unbuttoned entirely then wrap it across the front like I did or button one or two buttons at the top then twist it and wrap it under on the same side for a cleaner look. Either way is super chic and something I’ll definitely be doing more often this summer.
