The Benefits of Having a Routine

I often hear people say “less routine, more life”.  As if having a routine was the end of life itself.  Which means I was severely misled in health class.  But personally I don’t understand that philosophy.  Or why people think having a routine is the worst thing in the world?  In fact a lot of my success comes from having a daily routine. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect.  There are days when I throw out my rituals for something frivolous.  Hello bear claw from Bread on a Tuesday!  But sticking to my routine has helped me in so many ways.

While some people think it can be monotonous, I find joy in my daily activities.  Making myself protein pancakes in the morning, hitting the gym right after work, walking Ana around the city at sunset.  The truth is having a routine brings me peace.  I find happiness in my everyday life while working towards where I see myself.  If we only focus on the highs: a trip to Cancun, a raise, a new apartment, then most of us will spend our lives unhappy.

If you’re one of those people who can’t stand the idea of a routine, I urge you to reconsider.  It doesn’t have to be strict, or structured.  Start with something simple.  Dedicating 5 minutes to reading or walking or whatever brings you joy.  Then slowly add activities that will help you reach your personal or professional goals.  For me that’s working out, meal prepping, and reading. Before you know it these things become a habit.  You wake up happier, more fulfilled and even find that you have more free time in the day.  You really start to appreciate your current situation and rest easier knowing you’re working towards your dreams!

So true ! We’re drawn to believe that routines are negative when we can make them positive. Finding joy in the small things we do is the key.
