Pattern Play: Plaid

Sep 23, 2019 | Ways to Wear

I was first introduced to the idea of wearing plaid way back in middle school.  My dad and I were walking through Gordmans when he stopped at a pair of plaid pants that had a hint of purple and asked, “what about these”? I thought they were hideous, bear in mind at the time my style consisted of graphic tees with flared jeans so the thought of deviating from that mortified me. Though he didn’t force them on me, my father’s response has always stuck with me, “you can’t be afraid to try new things and stand out. You gotta develop some swagger, Blackwell’s weren’t made to fit in.”

It wasn’t until a few years into corporate life that I revisited the idea of wearing plaid. This also happened to be around the time plaid was having a major fashion moment. My first taste of plaid was a jumpsuit. I know you’re thinking to yourself, seriously Jordan, a jumpsuit, that’s a little extra isn’t it? But during the rise of plaid I was determined not to look like the sea of bloggers who were all obsessing over plaid blazers at the time. After that jumpsuit, I was hooked! What I’ve grown to love about plaid is that it’s something that truly never goes out of style. A plaid blazer, a pair of plaid pants, even a plaid jumpsuit, will always be something that you can wear year after year. With its resurgence in the fashion scene alongside houndstooth I decided to share 7 chic plaid outfit ideas that you can rock almost year round. So keep scrolling to find some new ways to wear your plaid pieces!

If you’re looking for a classic plaid look pair a tailored vest with a pair of plaid pants. To bring your outfit into the season skip your go to pair of black shoes and reach for a white pair of boots or sneakers.

For pre-fall, or late spring, pair a plaid blazer with all white for a fresh yet classic business casual outfit.

Take your plaid blazer from classic to on trend by cinching it at the waist with a belt.  Bonus points for mixing prints if the belt is also plaid!

For my jumpsuit enthusiasts pair a plaid jumpsuit with a classic blazer for a minimal yet chic professional outfit.

Give your plaid blazer a bit of edge by pairing it with a leather skirt and some chic sneakers.

Keep the edge going by layering a leather jacket over a plaid jumpsuit, or with a pair of plaid pants for a chic casual fall outfit. Bonus points if you rock it with some comfy yet stylish kicks.

If you’re feeling really bold piece together a plaid suit with plaid separates for a fashion forward yet classic business professional look.
