Versatility is so important when it comes to making the most out of your wardrobe. When you don’t have a big budget to ball out on the latest and greatest from Gucci or Burberry, a girl can hope though, you have to be saavy with what clothes you spend your hard earned money on. For those of us who are on a budget not only is finding affordable clothing important but finding unique ways to wear what we have helps us to get the most bang for our buck. Here are some questions you need to ask yourself to determine if a garment will be a versatile addition to your wardrobe:
- Can I create at least 3 outfits with this piece using clothes I already own? You don’t want to add something to your closet if you don’t have clothes readily available to wear it with. When adding new clothes to your closet you should already have items ready to go with it which keeps you from spending money on more clothes that only go with your new piece.
- Will it go from day to night? Be sure that your new piece can transition from your day time responsibilities to your night time activities with ease.
- Does it work for more than one season? Ideally you want your new piece to work year round, but it should be suitable for at least two seasons out of the year.
- Are there multiple ways I can wear or style this piece to keep it fresh? A versatile garment, like this maxi dress, can be worn various ways to create new outfits. This maxi dress can be worn as a longline trench coat, a tunic, and of course a dress allowing me to at least 3 different ways to wear it!
You don’t need the big bucks to be stylish! Having pieces that work with each other to create looks that work for a majority of your lifestyle and from season to season is the key to creating an endless wardrobe on a budget.

Cute! I always try to picture different ways to wear something before I buy it!

Darcy, such a great strategy! Many people don’t even think about that when buying something new and end up spending more money.
Wow, that’s a great piece. It looks great on you x
Thanks Alicia, it was such a great find. Urban Outfitters had one for 10x as much as it was going for on Forever 21 so I’m happy I waited it out.
This look is stunning! I love the coat and the fur clutch.

So chic! Love this innovative outfit. You just gave me a new way to wear my flares…

Liz, so happy I could give you some inspiration on a new way to style your flares! Can’t wait to see the look.
I tend to grab the cheapest and safest item most times to wear but sometimes that doesn’t mean they are necessarily versatile. I do think that leggings, chambray and a good vest are versatile. Cute look!

Great point Rachel, so many people grab something that they think will be versatile but really isn’t. I totally agree that with your choices and glad you enjoy my look!
