Hey you, welcome back! I have a question, what’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word kimono, I know when I hear it I think of the 70’s or the orient and both of which are SO NOT my style, or so I thought. As you may know by now I am all about experimentation when it comes to style, I mean how else are you going to learn what makes you look and feel great? You learn by trying new things and knowing when to embrace or pass on certain trends. From there it’s about learning how to make the trend yours.
Surprisingly kimonos aren’t that different than a trench coat or duster and when you put it in that context, it makes styling it to fit your esthetic so much easier to do. Kimonos are actually very versatile, so I thought I would share some tips on new ways for you to style yours:
- Wear it as a Top. This trick is nothing new for me and super easy with the help of some strategically placed safety pins. It also makes getting away with wearing shorts that are a tad bit too short a breeze. See how I did it with a vest.
- Wear it as a Dress. Also another play from the Jordan Styling Handbook, copyright pending lol, is to wrap the kimono and use a belt to cinch your body at the waist to create a dress. See how I did it with my trench.
- Wear it as Duster. Use a printed kimono to give your basic outfit a bit of umph, the key is to pair it with a classic silhouette or chic accessories like pointed booties and a structured bag to avoid looking like you’ve come back from the 70’s.
Trying out new styles, colors and trends is important on your style journey to help you pinpoint what does and doesn’t work for you. I tell my clients that more importantly than trying new trends is experimenting with new ways to wear the clothes you already have in order to maximize your wardrobe. great ideas. love your photos. I just wear kimonos as a cover up for extra warmth or when tanks alone aren’t appropriate.

I love your idea of wearing the kimono as a top, very neat idea. I have also to try tying the ends together towards my bust to create a crop top effect. Great style tips and thank you for linking up to “Bloggers Who Have Inspired Me” today.

Love your shoes! They are killer. I love how you gave several options for how to wear a kimono. They aren’t really my style but maybe I would wear one over an outfit as a topper.
